Intro- ‘Curry Powder’
Gulmarg is a small isolated hill-village situated in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir at the western extremity of the Himalayas which is a border between Pakistan and India.
The village itself sits in gently undulating meadows high above the Kashmiri plateau at about 2,700m.
Due to its geographic location Gulmarg gets some of the heaviest snowfalls in the Himalayas and it has earned the distinction of being the best ski resort in the Himalayas with a view of ‘Nanga Parbat(8128m)’ which is one of more than 8000m summits in Himalaya mountains.
Backcountry Powder Skiing Season
Backcountry Powder Skiing season for ‘Gulmarg’ starts from early Dec to late Mar but peak season is between early Jan and late Feb.
As ‘Free-ride ski’ magazine said;
“Gulmarg’s snow terrain is just like heli-skiing without a helicopter!”, Gulmarg’s gondola makes that possible.
As Guinness Book of Records listed it for the gondola going up highest in the world, skiers feel thrill like they are going up to the sky by helicopter because it goes from the gondola station(2650m) to top of Gulmarg(3980m).

Gulmarg’s free-ride course
Gulmarg hotels exhibit a strong colonial charm coupled cottage-like rooms. All rooms are double with en suite bathrooms, and fully equipped with linen. A porter regularly warms up the rooms by firing up the bakari with wood(pot-bellied stove)
There are restaurants with menu for Indian food and western food and also bars!
I think they are well building up atmospheres for world skiers coming to Gulmarg.
