Powder Skiing on Mt.Halla of Jeju #1
Name : teamax Date : 2012-06-16 AM 10:10:02, Read : 1080

Jeju Island''s nick name is ''Triple Island''. It''s because there are so many women, Winds, and Rocks.

But I think that nick name was made by people who have not been to winter Halla Mt. of Jeju Island.

Winter Halla Mt. , it is the tropical winter kingdom where palm trees and snow blizard exist together.

Epilogue

It was the time that I was hunting fresh powder snow, and crazy about that like other backcountry powder skiing hunters as looking for every spots of Sahoro mountain to find fresh powder where has the best quality of powder snow in Hokkaido where also has the best quality of powder snow in the world.

A conversation with my Korean Co-ski instructor was the triger. It was about whether it is possible to do powder skiing in Korea''s mountain since Japanese''s mountains look similar to Korea''s mountains.

After a few days later, that co-ski instructor showed me a couple of pictures of mountaineering skiers skiing down on Sunin Bong of Uleung Do.

More suprisingly, free-riders and mogul skiers were on that pictures.

2. Mountaineering skiers on Suninbong of Uleung Do where has best powder snow in Korea

Project ''Changbaishan to Halla
¡¯

I made up my mind to challenge backcountry powder skiing on Korea''s mountains where have less snow than Japan or Canada and trees which have narrow rooms between them. After then I made this project for challenging backcountry powder skiing on from Baedu Mt. whichi is start of Korea peninsular to Hall Mt. which is end of Korea peninsular.

It was kind of my personal challenge, and also events for advertising my company.

The matter was finding places for backcountry powder skiing. Baek Du Mt.''s amount of snow is so famous that it was picked first but headache in my head was to pick good places for powder skiing under DMZ.

It was Daegwanryung-Samyang Farm which was picked after Baekdu Mt. It came to my head first since I had done mountaineering skiing over there during my military service.

Frankly, now I realized that the fresh powder snow is the best for powder skiing at that time, but when it goes back that time, it was just much snow that I could not turn my ski at all, and it was doing kind of cushion function for falling. =)

However, even though I was a soldier at that time, I still remember vividly that I screamed "Yay~~" when I skied on off-piste of the mountain and along the trails.

Uleung Do was nominated for next. I still remember this question asking where has the most rain and snow in South Korea when I was in high-shcool, so I picked Uleung Do because of its snow amount.

Uleung Do''s maximum amount of snow is almost 4m. So I believe Uleung Do is one of the best places for backcountry powder skiing in South Korea.

Actually, I started my winter project with only 3 places, but a winter picture of Hall Mt. of Jeju Island fixed my eyes on it at Jeju International airport lobby when I was on a way to MTB adventure in Jeju.

1. ''Baekdu Mt.'' which is beginning of Korean mountain area
2. ''Hwangbyung Mt. & Daegwangryung'' area where are for Special Forces'' winter training
3. ''Uleung Do'' where boosts its most amount of snow in South Korea
4. ''Halla Mt'' where palm trees and heavy powder exist together

¡®Snow in Jeju?¡¯

I was standing there with that question for a while, and suddenly one idea blew off my head that let''s ski on Hall Mt.

I started asking owner of quest house about Halla Mt. in winter, and I got surprising news. It was that snow comes up to adults'' chest level.

My heart was beating hard. After I came back to Seoul, I started studying Halla Mt. through Internet and books, and I found the information that professional mountain climbers often have training for mountaineering skiing on Halla Mt..

So I got confident and finally Halla Mt. became the first stage that I stepped up for ''Changbaishan to Hall'' project!!
