Every spring, thousands of people travel to the beautiful island of Jindo Island to witness one of Korea’s most fascinating natural phenomena: the sea literally parts, revealing a path across the ocean floor. Known as the Jindo Sea Parting Festival, this unique event combines nature, culture and celebration into one unforgettable experience.

Festival Dates and Location
The 46th Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival will take place from April 17 to April 20, 2026, on Jindo Island in the southwestern part of South Korea.
During this time, the tide recedes between Jindo and the small nearby island of Modo, revealing a 2.8-kilometer-long path across the seabed for about an hour. Visitors can walk across the ocean floor, collect shells and experience what many call the “Korean Moses Miracle.”
This rare natural phenomenon happens due to tidal changes and the festival celebrates it with cultural performances, parades and activities that attract visitors from all over the world.

What to Expect at the Festival
While the sea-parting itself is the highlight, the festival offers a wide range of activities throughout the four-day event. Visitors can enjoy traditional Korean culture, live performances and interactive experiences along the beach and festival grounds.

One of the most memorable moments is the Sea Road Walking Experience, where thousands of people walk together along the temporary pathway that appears between the islands. It’s a once-a-year opportunity to quite literally walk across the sea.
The festival also includes colorful parades and torchlight ceremonies, traditional music and dance performances and live concerts that create a lively atmosphere day and night. Cultural demonstrations allow visitors to learn more about Jindo’s traditions, including folk performances, local crafts and heritage experiences.

For those looking for something interactive, there are hands-on activities and competitions, including youth performances, art experiences and fun cultural programs for international visitors. Food stalls line the festival area, offering fresh seafood and local specialties from the region.

A Festival Rooted in Legend and Culture
Beyond the natural wonder, the festival is also connected to local folklore. According to legend, an elderly woman named Granny Ppong prayed for the sea to open so she could reunite with her family across the water. The sea miraculously parted and the story has been celebrated ever since through rituals and cultural performances during the festival.
Today, the Jindo Sea Parting Festival is one of Korea’s most famous regional festivals, bringing together nature, history and community in a spectacular celebration.
