This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from Uskudar American High School Turkey on a two-day immersive journey through Seoul. The itinerary was carefully designed to blend cultural education with team-building experiences, offering students a deeper understanding of Korea’s past and present.
The program began at the iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace, where students witnessed the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony, a vibrant, historical reenactment that offered a glimpse into Korea’s royal heritage. Following the ceremony, students participated in a guided tour of the palace grounds, where they learned about the history of the Joseon Dynasty and the Palace through engaging stories and in-depth explanations of the site’s cultural significance.
From there, the group made their way to Bukchon Hanok Village, a preserved neighborhood of traditional Korean houses. Here, students took part in an orienteering-style team-building activity. The challenge involved completing various missions throughout the village, designed not only to promote collaboration but also to encourage interaction with the unique architectural and cultural landscape of the area.
Lunch was a hands-on introduction to Korean cuisine, as the students enjoyed beef shabu-shabu in Insadong, one of Seoul’s most vibrant cultural districts. Afterward, they were given time to explore the bustling streets, known for their traditional crafts and souvenirs.
In the afternoon, the group visited Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), a striking symbol of modern Seoul and a hub for design, fashion, and innovation. Students explored exhibitions and architectural displays, gaining insight into Korea’s forward-looking creativity and how it intersects with tradition.
That evening, the group enjoyed a traditional Korean BBQ dinner, giving them a taste of Korea’s famous food culture and a chance to bond in a lively, interactive dining experience.
The second day began with a sobering yet educational visit to the War Memorial of Korea. Through exhibits and artifacts, students learned about the Korean War, its impact on the nation, and the ongoing importance of peace and remembrance. The museum experience helped students reflect on the complex history of the Korean Peninsula and the resilience of its people.
Next on the itinerary was Bugak Palgakjeong Pavilion, perched on Bugaksan Mountain. The pavilion offers panoramic views of Seoul, and the visit provided students a chance to witness the harmony between Korea’s urban development and natural landscapes. It was a peaceful moment of reflection in the midst of a busy city.
To conclude the journey, students headed to Lotte World Mall, one of Seoul’s premier shopping and entertainment complexes. Here, they had the freedom to relax, shop, and even enjoy the Lotte World amusement park, a fun and fitting finale to their tour.
From start to finish, the trip was filled with meaningful moments and dynamic learning experiences. We’re grateful to Uskudar American High School for joining us and bringing such enthusiasm, curiosity, and positive energy to every part of the journey.
