Experience the Excitement of the World Cup in Korea: Plaza Watch Party

Written by Ashley Amabel Enriquez Vida

Experience the excitement of the World Cup in Korea

One of the most fun and exciting moments to be in Korea is during the World Cup, especially when South Korea is participating. The free, foreigner-friendly watch parties Seoul offers have been such an amazing opportunity to witness.

Even on a hot sunny day, fans of the sport started to arrive at the plaza. By around 9:20, there was already a large crowd, with people buying drinks and food at nearby cafes and convenience stores, and people looking for the best seats.

The energy of the place was palpable yet very safe, with paramedics on site, police officers directing foot traffic, and stalls handing out free water, wipes, and cardboard hats to shield against the sun.
The plaza had various barricades with giant screens everywhere, so regardless of where one sits, one can comfortably see the game. Before the game started, on some of the stages, there were live rock bands with people singing along. People leading chants, which kept spirits up and got people excited for the match.
If you are planning to attend any of the upcoming watch parties, be aware that people come prepared to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Many families come together with blankets, umbrellas, sunglasses, and coolers, since outside food and drinks are allowed and trash cans are available, so they can comfortably have a little picnic with their favorite snacks.
If you are planning to cheer for South Korea, we recommend wearing the South Korea jersey, a red shirt, or any shirt related to Korea. To enhance your experience, many people wear red horns, pom-poms, and even inflatable sticks to cheer alongside other fans during the game.

Moments before the live stream of the game started, people led cheers and chants like “DAE HAN MIN GUK!” and then clapped. The cheering and excitement rose after the national anthems as they began introducing all the team members, especially when Son Heung-min appeared on screen. When hopes were high at the beginning of the game, even with all the cheering, the noise level never became too disruptive, and people remained respectful of one another.

Every time Korea got close to scoring against Mexico, people were celebrating and cheering, and it is bittersweet to see the team not score. Although the outcome did not end up as South Korea had hoped, they were still friendly and celebrating alongside the people cheering for Mexico. Many of them would go up to take pictures with them, stand alongside them, and cheer with them, as well as teach them Korean cheers and different clapping sounds.

Overall, despite the heat, the energy and excitement of all the fans watching the game made this a wonderful experience and definitely one you should experience for yourself!
