Overnight DMZ Village Stay in Cheorwon: A Moment Frozen in Time

Written by Ambre El Ouazzani

We just wrapped-up our annual overnight DMZ stay in Cherwon! Over the course of two days, we visited a place steeped in history and full of meaning for Koreans. Through various key points that retrace the Korean War, participants were able to immerse themselves in a bubble where time stood still for an unforgettable experience. The rain couldn’t hold back our budding adventurers, and we were able to experience the visit at first hand, with a superb guide to accompany us throughout the first day.

The serious nature of the site and the heavy tension imposed by the presence of the military did not prevent our participants from fully enjoying the visit, whether it be the second infiltration tunnel, the Cheorwon Peace Observatory where binoculars can be used to see North Korea, the abandoned building of the former headquarters of the North Korean Labor Party or the Woljeong train station which once linked North Korea to Seoul station.

But fortunately, the seriousness was short-lived, as that evening the participants were able to take advantage of the calmer weather to take part in a pool party before heading off for our dinner, which was a mouth-watering Korean barbecue!

Our trip to Cheorwon isn’t just a trip dedicated to Korean history, it’s also a pleasant time away from the sometimes stifling dynamism of the capital. In the Korean countryside, it becomes easier to forge links and exchange ideas with the locals, and it’s this kind of experience that we at Adventure Korea want to highlight. That’s why the trip also includes a rice-cake-making class with these famous locals, a convivial moment full of laughter.

Finally, to end this fabulous trip on a high, the heavens were gracious to us and we enjoyed solid sunshine during a 3.6 km trek along the Hantangang River, with a breathtaking view of the canyon below.

A big thank you to all the participants for their good humour and energy throughout the weekend – it was an unforgettable experience!
