Elephant Care and Village Volunteering in Chiang Mai : A Life-Changing Experience for YISS Students

Written by Marissa Mirouse

Nestled in the lush, green hills of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is not only a destination for adventure and culture but also a hub for ethical wildlife conservation and community-based volunteering. This week, a group of dedicated students from Seoul’s Yongsan International School (YISS) are immersing themselves in a meaningful and transformative experience as part of their educational trip to Thailand. Organized by Adventure Korea, this journey is more than just a school trip ; it’s an opportunity for students to connect with nature, contribute to ethical wildlife conservation, and engage with local communities in a way that fosters empathy, responsibility, and global citizenship.

At Adventure Korea, we believe that travel should be more than sightseeing. It should be about making a difference, learning from new cultures, and growing as individuals. That’s why we’ve partnered with responsible elephant sanctuaries and rural villages in Chiang Mai to offer YISS students a hands-on, immersive experience that combines education, conservation, and community service.

Thailand has a complex history with elephants, which have long been symbols of strength, wisdom, and cultural significance. However, many elephants in Thailand have faced exploitation in the tourism and logging industries, leading to physical and emotional suffering. Ethical elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for these majestic creatures, providing them with a safe and natural environment where they can thrive.

For the YISS students, participating in elephant care is an opportunity to learn about wildlife conservation, ethical tourism, and the importance of protecting endangered species. Meanwhile, village volunteering allows them to engage with local communities, understand rural Thai life, and contribute to sustainable development projects. Together, these experiences help students develop a deeper appreciation for global issues while making a tangible impact during their trip.

A Day in the Life: Elephant Care at the Sanctuary

The YISS group’s journey begins at an ethical elephant sanctuary, where the focus is on observation, education, and respectful interaction (no riding or forced performances). Here’s what a typical day of elephant care looks like for the students:

Morning: Learning About Elephant Conservation

The day starts with an educational briefing from the sanctuary’s experts, who explain the history of elephants in Thailand, the challenges they face, and the mission of the sanctuary. Students learn about the individual stories of the elephants—many of whom have been rescued from circuses, logging camps, or abusive tourism operations. This session helps students understand the importance of ethical treatment and the role of sanctuaries in conservation.

Feeding and Bathing the Elephants

Next, the students participate in preparing and feeding the elephants. Under the guidance of the sanctuary’s staff, they help cut and distribute fruits and vegetables, a favorite treat for the elephants! This hands-on activity allows students to observe the elephants’ behaviors up close and build a connection with these gentle giants.

One of the most memorable moments is bathing the elephants in a nearby river or mud pit. Armed with buckets and brushes, the students work together to gently wash the elephants, who seem to enjoy the attention as much as the students enjoy the experience. Laughter fills the air as the elephants playfully splash water with their trunks, creating a joyful and bonding experience for everyone involved.

Afternoon: Observing Elephants in Their Natural Habitat

After lunch, the students spend time observing the elephants as they roam freely in the sanctuary’s forested areas. This is a chance to see how elephants interact with each other, forage for food, and enjoy their natural behaviors, far removed from the stresses of captivity. The sanctuary’s experts share insights into elephant social structures, communication, and intelligence, deepening the students’ understanding of these incredible animals.

Cultural Exchange and Homestays

To deepen their connection with the community, some students participate in homestays, where they live with a local family for a night or two. This immersive experience allows them to learn about Thai customs, try homemade meals, and participate in daily village life. From helping with household chores to learning traditional crafts, the students gain a firsthand appreciation for the simplicity and warmth of rural Thai culture.

Visiting Local Markets and Temples

No trip to Chiang Mai would be complete without exploring its rich cultural heritage. The students visit local markets, where they can sample Thai street food, practice bargaining, and interact with vendors. They also tour ancient temples, such as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where they learn about Buddhist traditions and the history of Northern Thailand. These excursions provide context and depth to their volunteering experience, helping them understand the cultural and spiritual values that shape the community.

At Adventure Korea, we’re committed to responsible and ethical travel. When planning school trips, voluntourism, or cultural exchanges, we prioritize partnerships with organizations that align with our values, animal welfare, community empowerment, and environmental sustainability.
