Our international QSI students embarked on a meaningful journey that blended Korean history, culture, nature, and cuisine into one unforgettable experience. From the solemn echoes of the DMZ to the colorful chaos of a local market, every stop of the trip offered something unique: insight, creativity, laughter, and connection.
Stepping Into History at the DMZ
Together we visited one of Korea’s most significant places; the DMZ. As students explored the exhibitions, they learned about the peninsula’s divided history, the struggles faced by families, and the ongoing hope for reunification. Through interactive displays, artifacts, and powerful storytelling, the group gained a deeper understanding of how the past continues to shape life on both sides of the border.
Autumn Reflections on the Trail
The group also enjoyed a refreshing hike surrounded by Korea’s vibrant scenery. The crisp November air, gentle mountain paths, surrounding waters, and golden maple leaves created the perfect environment to unwind. Students chatted, laughed, and shared their impressions of the morning, connecting not only with nature, but also with each other.
A Taste of Tradition: Rice Cake Making
The cultural immersion continued with a traditional Korean rice cake making workshop. Students made their own creations, learning about the significance of tteok in Korean celebrations and everyday life. They also learned about all the different kinds of rice cakes in the Korean kitchen. This was a fun and sweet introduction to Korea’s culinary heritage.
Laughter filled the room as students compared each other’s tteok, and discovered how food connects people across cultures.
Royal Korea Comes to Life in Hanbok
Next the students transported centuries back into the past. Wearing vibrant traditional hanbok, they stepped into a historic Korean palace and explored its royal courtyards, ancient architecture, and beautifully preserved halls. Moving from gate to gate, they learned about palace ceremonies, noble traditions, and stories hidden in every corner of the complex.
Dressed in elegant colors, the students captured stunning photos, adding a regal touch to their cultural journey, and creating memories that will last long after the trip ends.
Into the Heart of Korean Flavor: Marketeering Experience
The final chapter of the trip brought our group to a bustling local food market, where Korea’s culture came alive through taste, color, and energy. Each student received a mission map, along with a set of challenges to complete throughout the market.
Teams raced through vibrant stalls, tasting authentic Korean dishes, guessing ingredients in mystery snacks, and taking fun group photos at iconic locations inside the market. Students practiced useful Korean expressions to communicate with local vendors, turning the market into a lively classroom filled with interaction and discovery.
When the mission timer ended, all teams gathered to compare their results. Points were tallied, laughs were shared, and the winning team received well-deserved applause and a special award for completing the most challenges.
A Perfect Blend of History, Culture & Delicious Discoveries
From powerful historical lessons at the DMZ to colorful hanbok walks, from hands-on cooking fun to adventurous market missions, this trip offered our international students a true taste of Korea. It was a trip filled with learning, exploration, connection, and joy; the kind of cultural experience that shapes memories for a lifetime.
