At Adventure Korea, we believe in creating unforgettable outdoor experiences that inspire students to connect with nature. On September 23rd, we were thrilled to host the Grade 6 students from Yongsan International School Seoul for a day filled with adventure, learning, and discovery at a park in Suwon. The day’s activities centered around two main experiences: Bushcraft and Ecoteering, offering a unique blend of survival skills and eco-friendly exploration.
Bushcraft: Building Shelters and Survival Skills
The students kicked off their adventure by diving into the world of bushcraft. Under the guidance of our expert instructors, they learned the art of survival in nature. Using natural materials found in the park, they built shelters sturdy enough to weather the elements. This hands-on activity not only taught them how to construct effective shelters but also fostered teamwork and creativity.
Additionally, the students practiced knot-tying, mastering key knots essential for survival. They also learned other valuable wilderness survival skills, including how to find and gather natural materials for various outdoor needs. These activities encouraged the students to work together, think critically, and appreciate the resources nature provides.
Ecoteering: Navigating Nature Through Fun Missions
The second part of the day was all about Ecoteering. For those unfamiliar, Ecoteering is a dynamic outdoor activity where participants are divided into teams and complete nature-related missions, combining the thrill of orienteering with eco-friendly challenges. Each group was tasked with completing various nature-themed missions across the park.
Ecoteering offers students the chance to explore the outdoors through teamwork-based tasks and challenges, designed to teach them about the environment, sustainability, and the importance of protecting natural spaces. It fosters curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills while emphasizing the need to respect and care for nature.
The Importance of Outdoor Education
This event wasn’t just about fun—it was an important aspect of outdoor education. Outdoor education immerses students in nature, teaching them practical skills while helping them build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of responsibility for the environment. By stepping out of the classroom and into the natural world, students gain valuable experiences that foster both personal growth and academic development.
Engaging with the natural world through activities like bushcraft and Ecoteering allows students to:
- Develop teamwork and leadership skills
- Improve their physical health and well-being
- Learn about sustainability and the environment
- Enhance creativity and critical thinking
Outdoor education is especially crucial in today’s tech-driven world, providing balance by offering meaningful, hands-on learning in a natural setting. The students from Yongsan International School left with new skills, a stronger connection to nature, and an appreciation for outdoor learning.
A Day Well Spent in Nature
As the students rotated between bushcraft and Ecoteering activities, they were fully immersed in nature throughout the day. They not only learned essential outdoor skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the natural world. Whether it was building a shelter, crafting with natural materials, or playing traditional games in the open air, the students thoroughly enjoyed spending the day outdoors, experiencing hands-on learning that extended far beyond the classroom.
