Written by Nazligul Akbulak

On a crisp winter morning in Seoul, students were guided through one of Korea’s most iconic historical landmarks as part of an immersive cultural experience organized by Adventure Korea. The visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest and most renowned of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty, offered far more than sightseeing. It provided a meaningful journey into Korea’s royal past, architectural brilliance and enduring traditions.

Visit of Gyeongbokgung Palace: A Travel Through Time and History

Stepping into the Heart of the Joseon Dynasty

Often referred to as the “Northern Palace,” Gyeongbokgung was first constructed in 1395 and served as the main royal residence and political center of Joseon Dynasty. For centuries, it stood as the symbolic and administrative heart of Korean governance.

As the students entered through Gwanghwamun Gate, The palace’s grand main entrance, they were introduced to the scale and elegance of traditional Korean royal architecture. The expansive courtyards, symmetrical layout and intricately painted wooden structures reflected the Confucian principles that shaped Joseon society, order, hierarchy and harmony.

Adventure Korea’s guides provided historical context throughout the visit, explaining how the palace functioned not only as a royal residence but also as a center for diplomacy, ceremony and state affairs.

The Royal Guard Changing Ceremony

A highlight of the experience was the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony, a vibrant reenactment that brought centuries-old traditions to life. Dressed  in colorful hanbok and carrying traditional weapons such as spears and shields, the guards marched in precise formation to the rhythmic sounds of drums and cymbals. The ceremony offered students a visual and cultural insight into the strict protocols that once governed palace security.

Discovering the Palace’s Architectural Treasures

The tour continued to Geunjeongjeon Hall, the grand throne hall where kings conducted state affairs and received foreign envoys. Standing on its elevated stone platform, the hall represents the authority and dignity of the monarchy. The intricate carvings and symbolic decorative elements were carefully explained, highlighting how every architectural detail carries meaning rooted in philosophy and tradition.

Another significant stop was Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, one of the most picturesque structures within the palace grounds. Surrounded by a serene lotus pond, this elegant two-story pavilion once hosted royal banquets and diplomatic gatherings. Its harmonious design and reflection on the water demonstrate the balance between architecture and nature that characterizes traditional Korean design.

A Living Cultural Heritage

Beyond its grand halls and ceremonial spaces, Gyeongbokgung Palace offers a peaceful environment where history and nature coexist. The palace grounds are enriched with traditional gardens, ancient trees and carefully preserved structures that continue to tell the story of Korea’s royal era.

Throughout the visit, Adventure Korea’s guides ensured that students not only observed the site but understood its historical significance and cultural value. The experience encouraged reflection of the importance of preserving heritage while appreciating its relevance in modern Korea.

The visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace stood as a powerful reminder that history is not confined to textbooks. Through guided storytelling, immersive observation and cultural context, the students experience a meaningful connection to Korea’s royal past.
