Educational Mission Race Full of Fun : The Story of Heungdeok High School Students Exploring Bukchon Hanok Village

Written by Narin Yoon

Bukchon Hanok Village is a representative cultural space where tradition and modernity coexist in Seoul. With its quiet hanok houses and familiar narrow alleyways, it is a special place where visitors can experience the atmosphere of old Korea as it is preserved.

As one of the most attractive spaces in Seoul, the hanok village is an ideal location for team-building activities. It provides an immersive atmosphere that allows students to focus, explore, and communicate with one another without distractions. Its narrow alleyways, traditional buildings, and hidden inner courtyards naturally form a maze-like environment, making it highly suitable for mission-based race activities that require teamwork, communication, and quick decision-making.

In this place, students from Heungdeok High School had a special exploration experience as they got to rediscover Bukchon Hanok Village in a new way. This program was not simply an educational activity, but a treasure-hunt-style experience filled with historical learning. It was designed so that students could experience wayfinding skills, cultural exploration, and a variety of fun challenges within the beautiful historical setting of Bukchon.

The core of this activity is the mission race. The teams explored Bukchon while carrying out various missions. Each team received an instruction sheet containing a detailed map of Bukchon, a compass, and a list of places to find. Some locations, such as the famous well in Bukchon Hanok Village, were easy to find, but there were also places like small temples hidden between houses or inner courtyards that required careful observation and teamwork. The students interpreted the map and planned their routes, cooperating with each other to achieve their goals within a limited time.

Through these activities, it helped them observe their surroundings more carefully, think critically, and learn about Korean culture through direct experience.

Through this activity, students were able to improve teamwork skills among friends and confirm their problem-solving abilities, while also experiencing a deeper observation of history and tradition. With maps, compasses, and various missions, the students moved around Bukchon, discovering hidden landmarks, answering quizzes, and completing interesting hands-on tasks. At the end of the race, a prize was given to the team with the highest score. The program was designed so that all students could build new friendships and actively participate together, allowing everyone to enjoy the program.

In team-building races held in Korea, fun cultural elements are an essential part. Therefore, Adventure Korea increased children’s curiosity and encouraged active participation through unique and uncommon missions. One of these missions was to find a staff member dressed as a guard from the Netflix drama Squid Game.

Students had to locate the staff member, who was fully dressed in the iconic red uniform and mask, and then challenge them to play a traditional game called block dropping. This game is played by knocking down a wooden block placed on top of the head using another block.

These challenges added fun and humorous elements to the race, allowing students to laugh throughout, develop strategies, and cooperate and interact with one another.

When the mission race ended, the students added up their scores and presented a prize to the team with the highest score. Rather than keeping the prize to themselves, the students shared the joy with their classmates and divided the reward together, showing a stronger sense of unity than before the activity. It became clear that the students of Heungdeok High School gained much more than just points. This activity was designed to develop teamwork, critical thinking skills, and cultural understanding, and the results were clearly evident.
