Seongsu is one of Seoul’s most popular and up and coming neighborhoods as of late. Originally an industrial area of the city, its popularity has exploded recently with the conversion of many of its warehouses and buildings into trendy cafes and restaurants as well as fashionable shops. Due to this revitalization, the area has earned the title “The Brooklyn of Seoul,” and fittingly so. The area is buzzing with shoppers visiting big name stores from New Balance and Adidas to smaller independently run stores.
Getting to Seongsu is very easy. From pretty much anywhere in the city, make your way to Seoul Subway Line 2 (the green one). Just ride Line 2, the Inner City Loop, until you get to Seongsu Station. Make your way down the stairs and escalator outside, then the streets of the neighborhood await.
In addition to flagship brand stores, another thing that Seongsu is known for is the prevalence of pop-up stores in the area. Pop-ups are when a brand rents a space for a short period of time, often offering specialty products at the pop-up location. By checking online/following your favorite brands on social media, you can keep track of any pop-ups throughout Seoul that they might have – quite often they may be in Seongsu!
Many of the pop-up stores as well as the flagship stores draw large crowds even in the middle of a weekday. If you go, don’t be surprised by people queuing outside of the shops in order to get in. Many of them only allow small amounts of people in at a time. Despite this, the wait times are never really that bad. If you wish to avoid waiting, going on a weekday is recommended, though it’s pretty busy on both weekdays and weekends.
On top of shopping, Seongsu is also well known for its food scene. After venturing off the main streets with all the shops, many small independently run coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants can be found scattered throughout its streets.
Also nearby Seongsu is Seoul Forest Park, the third largest park in Seoul. Admission is free, and it’s open year round, so it’s a perfect spot to sit back and relax after shopping or dining in Seongsu’s center.
