Korean Food Masterchef Team-Building Event for GSMA

Writer : Sandra Bakker

For over 20 years, Adventure Korea has been creating memorable and effective team-building events for companies and organizations. Our wide range of activities is designed to strengthen communication, collaboration, and camaraderie among teams. One of the many experiences we offer is a culturally immersive cooking class, where teams come together to learn, cook, and bond over traditional Korean dishes. Recently, we had the pleasure of organizing a special cooking event for the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).

Team-building is crucial for companies seeking to enhance employee cooperation, improve problem-solving skills, and build trust. It allows team members to interact in a more relaxed and informal setting, strengthening relationships that can directly impact workplace performance. Engaging in shared activities fosters a sense of unity, and when teams succeed together, they develop a stronger commitment to collective goals. At Adventure Korea, our activities are specifically designed to not only be enjoyable but also to promote these essential workplace dynamics.

Adventure Korea recently organized a unique and culturally immersive team-building event for the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA). The event featured a hands-on Korean cooking class, allowing participants to bond through culinary challenges while gaining insight into Korea’s rich food traditions.

The session kicked off with a lesson in crafting makgeolli, a traditional Korean alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice. Makgeolli, known for its slightly sweet and tangy flavor, is one of Korea’s oldest drinks and has been enjoyed for centuries. The process begins by steaming rice, mixing it with water and nuruk (a fermentation starter), and allowing the mixture to ferment for several days. This fermentation gives makgeolli its milky, fizzy quality.

In this interactive part of the session, participants learned about the science behind fermentation and the historical significance of the drink. Together, they took part in making their own batches of makgeolli, fostering camaraderie and teamwork in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Once the hard work was done, they enjoyed a few glasses of the drink they had just prepared, adding to the sense of achievement and shared success.

Next on the agenda was the preparation of haemul pajeon, a Korean seafood pancake. Haemul pajeon is a savory pancake made with green onions (pajeon) and a variety of seafood, often including shrimp, squid, and clams, all bound together in a batter made from flour, egg, and water. The Master Chef led the demonstration, carefully guiding the participants through each step of the process, from mixing the batter to frying the perfect crispy pancake.

After the demonstration, it was the participants’ turn to try their hand at making their own haemul pajeon. Each team had to work together to create their pancake, applying the skills they had just learned. This hands-on experience allowed everyone to contribute, enhancing collaboration and creativity within the group. The friendly competition added an extra layer of excitement, as teams vied for the title of the best pancake.

Finally, the chef evaluated the pancakes and crowned one team’s creation as the best, awarding the winning group the title of Master Chef of GSMA. This light-hearted competition brought the event to a close with laughter and celebration, as participants reflected on their shared experiences and newfound skills.

By working together to create traditional Korean dishes, GSMA members not only learned about Korean culture but also strengthened their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Events like these help foster a sense of unity and accomplishment, making for a memorable and effective team-building experience.
